Who We Are

We are a not-for-profit project of Oregon Sustainable Agriculture Land Trust (OSALT), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that accepts donated land and holds it in perpetuity as agricultural land, for the purposes of education and research into sustainable agriculture.

The UFC’s mission is to bring neighbors together to transform vacant lots into neighborhood food gardens for the purposes of community building, education and improving food security. Our goal is to grow twice as much as we need to feed collective members so we can donate the remaining 50% of our produce to organizations that work to end hunger.

How The Collective Works

The UFC is much like a community garden, but instead of having your own garden bed, you join together with your neighbors to grow food together in shared neighborhood gardens. We find it much more fun and rewarding to garden with other people; lasting friendships have formed and flourish.

It Starts With The Land

Generous landowners share their land with the UFC. We test it for lead, seek out a garden manager for the site.

If You Build It, They Will Come

As people in the community get involved, it’s only a matter of time before the empty site transforms into a collective, neighborhood-run garden.

A Barter Community

Once the garden is successfully producing food, garden volunteers bring their harvest to the UFC’s weekly barter market.
